NEWBURGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Controversy is swirling in town over a before and after school program that Newburgh runs for school children.

As many as 11 children are part of the town's before and after school program. Kids are dropped off at the Newburgh town office before school and then picked up there at the end of the day.

Last year state officials from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services classified the program as a 'daycare' and now it has been revealed that the program has been operating without a license or insurance. Town leaders have been looking to make the program its own entity and cut it off from town management.

They looked to discuss the issue with residents at the last selectmen's meeting. Many parents with children in the program weren't thrilled.

"They're {state officials} doing the same thing to Hampden and to Bangor," said Mike Burns, who is the chair of the Newburgh select board, "That's why we have to go and get a license."

Newburgh's select board voted Monday night to allow the program to continue operating until the end of this school year.
